It’s been almost 2 years since becoming an imperfect vegan. Yes, I am outing myself because I’ve tried very hard to eat 100% vegan…but sometimes a cookie just begs to be eaten. And I know it’s not excuse. A minute of enjoyment for me…a life for an animal. However, I can officially say that since the start of 2018, I have been 100% vegan! I have taken the time to make my own versions of things that are not vegan friendly. I’ve discovered new restaurants and stores that cater to vegans. I have especially learned to say NO to temptations because in my heart I know what I am doing is right and it makes ME happy to know I saved another life.
However, just because my diet doesn’t harm animals…my lifestyle still does. And YES I’m outing myself again! I want to be transparent and accountable for my actions and the legacy I leave behind. My lifestyle is not cruelty free. I don’t buy leather or fur which is very easy to stay away from… But the products I use every day DOES harm animals.
Makeup, soaps, cleaners, hair products… all these items are hurting a life of an innocent animal. And that’s why I have decided to take my Veganism one step further and STOP the cruelty towards animals.
First off, I have been in need of shampoo and facial cleanser for a while now but didn’t want to fall back into using confirmed animal tested products. So I did research and checked which products are 100% cruelty free. I will point out that cruelty-free and vegan are NOT the same. So please be aware of that if you are just wanted vegan products (no animal byproducts) or cruelty-free (no animals were tested on) and there are even products that are BOTH! YAY!
For your head
So what I use now for my Shampoo and Conditioner is a combo of Pureology and Shea Moisture (I know they’re not vegan but I’m trying ok!) The Shea Moisture line I got was the Peace Rose complex…and honestly, doesn’t smell that great. It’s a little sour smelling in my opinion, but it works. And the Pureology is the Curl Complete (honestly this was just given to me as a house warming present) But turns out it’s a cruelty-free line.
For your face
Then I needed new face wash, so at first I got the Shea Moisture and got the 100% virgin coconut oil milk wash. I used that both in the morning when I woke up and right before I went to bed. After about a week though, I was not feeling the scent and feel of that wash to get my mornings started. I then looked around for another face wash that would give me that zing and help me start my day. That’s when I came across Avalon Organics. Most of Avalon Organics products are BOTH Vegan and Cruelty-Free (except the lip balms) so that’s good news! I went for their Vitamin C cleansing gel which has a citrusy smell I enjoy to wake me up in the morning. I have heard though that wearing vitamin C products on your skin in the sun is not good, but this is a face wash so I don’t think any harm will come of it.
and because face wash isn’t enough when it comes to skin care, I got a shit ton of other products! I used to use jojoba oil with some rose hip oil as a moisturizer, then got lazy and used ponds…and then that was it. BUT NOW I’m starting to actually spend the time to pamper my skin and take care of it. So After washing my face, I use Thayer’s witch hazel toner with rose petal. I love the smell and they also have a lavender scent which I also want to get! But anyway, I have always used a witch hazel as a toner, it’s like the tried and true astringent of all astringents. Thayer’s is a bit pricey but I don’t use too much, just enough to dampen a cotton pad and wipe all on my face.
After that depending on the time of day, we’ll start morning, I will lotion up with Shea Moisture’s Daily Hydration Face Lotion. It smell nice and really does hydrate. It absorbs fairly fast but leaves a slight residue, but once all soaked in it goes away. Its not super liquid-y, more creamy and luxurious. (I also use this at night) And then I will put on some sunscreen. Alba Botanica’s Very Emollient Lotion is what I use, and yes I know it is a body lotion with sunscreen but it works great. I have tried Kiss My Face’s face sunscreen and I be looking like a greasy piece of fried chycken. So I use Alba Botanica’s for every day wear. I will use Kiss My Face’s on summer days when I want extra protection (spf 50)
For night time, I will again, use the witch hazel as a toner and She Moisture to moisturize, but then I will take my homemade aloe gel and slather that all over my face. Then I will take another homemade serum with jojoba oil, rosehip oil, and lavender essential oil and hit my under eyes, forehead, and around my mouth.
For your body
And lastly, one of the cheapest VCF product line out there, Andalou! Good lord does this product need to blow up. It’s hella affordable and their lotions are fantastic. At first I thought it was a little bit greasy but once the lotion really gets into my skin, WOO! My hands feel SO NICE! I have two scents, 1000 roses and citrus sunflower. The 1000 roses smells a bit like an old lady but…I’m a little old crazy cat lady on the inside so it suits me. If you are lucky enough to have a Clark’s Nutritional center near you, they have travel size bottles for $1.99 for 1.7oz so I will be stocking up when they have the other scents!
So that is the last of my skin/beauty care so far. I will continue this series and show you about what I use to style my hair and eventually my new updated 100% cruelty-free makeup.
